The First Remington

Christopher Latham Sholes of Milwaukee invented the first commercially successful typewriter. Sholes had improved on the designs of earlier developers. Remington, a big arms supplier during the Civil War, was looking to diversify its product line. Sholes’ new machine became the Remington No. 1 in 1873.
